Confused/Doubts on possible choices

i'm not sure if this would be the correct place to post, but i'm all out of ideas - and perhaps some solid advice from the professionals here can help me make my final move

i've been on a job hunt for quite awhile now - and it seems no matter where i turn to, the company/individual would request/demand that i demonstrate some level of drafting/detail drawing skills using Autocad

now, i know how to do that, albeit not any better than fresh grad just pop out of college

my fear is, which i've seen with personal experience - that if/once such individual presents a certain level of autocad skills, they end up mostly, or exclusively, on drafting duties with 'spare time' for actual visualization, 3D renderings.

my passion has been 3D, and its my personal 'sink hole' that if i were to be placed entirely on autocad/2d drafting

what should i do? i loved my current position in company, but i simply not making enough for cost of living

on a different note: do you guys perform autocad drafting/planning tasks often while still visualizing the project/models? is it a requirement or more of a 'wider skill bigger reward' thing?

It all depends on what your being hired to do but if they want you to demonstrate these skills they are probably thinking that they will use you to produce CD's when things in the viz department are slow. For someone strait out of college in this job market I think it's a good way to get your foot in the door. Many of us have had to work jobs we didn't like just hoping for the chance of moving up the ladder some day, you can't always get what you want strait away.

It certainly helps to be able to do CD or design work when rendering slow down or comes to a halt. Otherwise, they may give you the axe if things slow down in the office. You have to be able to wear as many hats as possible because this 'career' can be a rocky road sometimes. Just make sure in your interview that you will be mostly a viz person and not a CAD monkey. Make sure they know that your goal is to be a renderer and not a toilet stall detailer.
