RyanSpaulding
Has anyone dealt with exporting from MicroStation (or other CAD formats) into Viz/3DS? I'm asking because sometimes even bringing a Max 5 file into Max 6 mucks it all up. How is the process? Any disadvantages?
Vince Paske
I can't speak for bringing in a microstation file directly into max/viz, but as for other file formats, I use the file link manager in max (have to have subscription) or viz and it seems to keep the normals facing the correct way. Is that what you mean by "mucking up"? Anytime I get, or have to work with a Microstation file, I always export to AutoCad. You might want to search the forums for similiar topics, this type of topic has generated some lively discussions. Good luck.
RyanSpaulding
The "mucking up" I'm referring to is flipped normals, vertecies out of place that must be welded, it's very time consuming. Here's the full deal. I know Max/Viz. I work for a company that does MicroStation visualizations and training. MS is very good at line work and measuring radius, parallel lines, ect. It's weakness is rendering/lighting/texturing. Essentially, I wanna know how mucked up the file will be if it is built in microstation, then brought into MAX to light/texture/ect. If I can export from MS to CAD, how nicely does a CAD file import into Max/Viz?
Crazy Homeless Guy
what format are you using? dwg file link is god. maybe thellinclude it in version 7.
chuck
hey ryan, we use microstation at my firm with viz 2005. so far so good. the main designer i have been working with created the model in MS, I then textured and rendered it with radiosity. there have been a few inverted faces, but that is easily fixed with the normal modifier. the courses (between block and brick etc) are separate boxes made in MS, and there are no artifacts or light leaks. i thought that would be an issue with radiosity. hope it works out, chuck
Sawyer
Nice Chuck - Just wondering if all those bricks are modeled how many poly's?

So what file format are you exporting into Viz? I haven't started it the importing into Max/Viz yet. Did you run into any snags? I'm interested in the technique you are using. chuck
we export the 3d model as a DWG and import that into Viz. all the layers are there, and the boxes etc are separate. it comes in as a complete model, not as a mesh with nothing but geometry (think sketch up). i cant remember running into any snags really, just a few reversed faces. the geometry was clean and measured out correctly. sawyer- there arent individual bricks modeled, just solids that have the maps applied. the image has 3 types of maps applied, block below, glazed brick (green) and the combination. the mixed one was made with a "brick maker" from lincoln bricks. or acme. not sure. you can download it and make some crazy stuff. hope that makes sense. chuck
RyanSpaulding
So is the Subscription NEEDED to import dwg?
RyanSpaulding
bump til I get an answer How does one go about getting a subscription? What does it cost?
chuck
what subscription are you talking about? we have full versions of MS and Viz, and I have never needed/heard of a subscription, the stuff just imports in... chuck
