theqball
if you scale down the image in PhotoShop you will probably get better results. the larger the image does NOT necessarily equal better results. The reason, 3ds Max has to fit this image into the graphics card memory and to do this efficiently it scales the image down to something more manageable (512x512 or 1024x1024). Also graphics cards love to work with textures that are a power of 2 resolution, ie 512x512 or 1024x1024 or 2048x2048... therefore, if you scale the image to a smaller power of 2 resolution with Photoshop you skip this process from occurring from within 3ds Max and have more options to control the quality of that conversion. I would recommend not going larger than 2kx2k.
Stephen Thomas
I agree with Shane. We've had this issue when using very high-res satellite images on terrain, the graphics card will often display a very pixelated image, sometimes even with warped mapping. The solution is to create a lower-res version of the texture that will display correctly in the viewport. You could try 4000 or 2000 pixels, whatever works, and check the 'Match bitmap size as closely as possible' boxes under the configure Direct3d settings.
