Weird dots...

Recommended Posts

Last week while working on a model in Max, these random pink and green dots starting popping up around my two monitors. They seem to come and go. They usually populate faster during rendering and blink on and off and move around the screen. I tried posting a screen shot, but it doesnt capture the phenomenon. I am suspecting my video card, but I have only had this machine for a few months now. It is a Dell XPS 9100 i7 with 12GB of ram. 64 bit operating system. The video card is an ATI Radeon HD 5970 (2GB). Any thoughts on this?

Thank you for the reply. I havent tried switching out cables yet because I have my system set up with a KVM switch. I have 6 DVI cables attached to it. One thing that I have noticed is that the dots only happen when switched over to the pc I mentioned above, and only when using 3ds Max. No other programs create this issue. Do you think that could still possibly be a cable issue? It seems to be getting worse. i.e. more dots, more frequently.

Alright, I am 99% sure that the issue is Nitrous related. I have no issues running sketchup, photoshop, or even 3ds Max 2011. As soon as I open a file in 2012, the dots start coming and going. I switched to Direct3D and didnt seem to have any issues, but navigating large scenes was super slow again. Any thoughts to remedy this?

Thanks!

  • 2 months later...

Ok, sorry to reopen a dead thread, but... Dell diagnosed my machine and ended up replacing the video card. Now 3 months later, I am having the same issues. Is there anything else that could be damaging the video cards? I actually got a wall of weird dots today, then the machine froze, and then to a blue screen of death. I was able to see the words "display", "driver" and "failed" before it shutdown on me. Any thoughts?
