Karl Larsen
None of their part lists are the part list I have??? That's understandable. I wasn't happy to read that story either. If you instead go to 3datstech.com and click any of the Newegg parts lists, then make your order, a commission will go to 3DATS, which is a CGarchitect partner. AJLynn
I just meant using one of the links on that page to get into Newegg. Then anything you do buy gets credited to them.
Slinger
Good catch, I hadn't seen that they'd done that. Looks like they just made a non-Extreme-Edition version of the 980 at a lower price point. Basically the i7-990x took the place of the i7-980x and the new i7-980 replaces the i7-970. Karl Larsen
AJ, WOW!!!! Hate to say I ordered my HP ZR24w before learning about the commission (all the remaining items will be ordered in the middle of next week and I will click through 3datstech.com to Newegg for your commission) but WOW this monitor is nice and AutoCAD at 1920 x 1200 is great -- like double the real estate! And this is a VERY bright minotor - I actually had to cut the brightness down to about 50% to avoid sunburn! Thanks, AJ! Awesome monitor.
AJLynn
You're very welcome. Those HP's have been very popular, judging from the number of clicks they get. I think they're probably the best value for IPS displays.
Karl Larsen
OK AJ, I clicked through 3datstech.com to get to Newegg and placed my $2575.67 (not including monitor) order about 20-minutes ago so you should be good-to-go! Thanks for all your help.

Scott Schroeder
What's your cooling options? Are you fan cooling or liquid cooling? I skimped on liquid and went to fan cooling and while the fan cooling does the job, it's still letting my temps get pretty high. I use RealTemp to monitor my CPU temps during render times, and 100 degrees C is near fail for the i7, or at least when the i7's start scaling back, and rendering usually pegs me at around 90C or higher. I'm looking at putting liquid cooling in as we speak.
Karl Larsen
I'm pretty sure that a heat sink & fan come with the Intel i7-980 and the case seems to have gone overboard with cooling fans. I'm not going to be animating any video clips for Lucas Films or Industrial Light and Magic or running any 15-hr renders so I should be ok... The dual dual-core-Xeon I work on now, from 7-yrs ago, has never had a cooling problem, and I am not looking to increase my work-load exponentially by a factor of 20 just to test the cooling -- it was just time for a new computer and I wanted the most bang I could get for my buck. I do not game or over clock – factory fast is fast enough for me. If it gets too hot I will buy a small refrigerator and put the box in the refrigerator :-)
Karl Larsen
AJ, Up and running - so far so good! Can't wait to get a little break from work so I can install some new software and see how it performs. That little Solid State Drive is an amazing lil bitty thing! Thanks again! AJLynn
You're welcome. What did you get, the Intel SSD? I've been thinking of adding one to my ultraportable but I'm waiting to see them come down in price a bit more.
Karl Larsen
Yes. Intel Intel 320 Series SSDSA2CW160G3K5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive link Only thing I'm a little worried about is that Win 7 64 used up over 25% of the drive already... All my data is always on other drives but I still have a few programs to load so we'll see what happens...
AJLynn
Windows has got a bit out of control but I don't see filling the rest of that up when it's for apps.

Karl Larsen
Well I didn't even know I had a 64-bit version of 3DS (shows you what I know) but I do! I'm still not setup and configured 100% but I ran a fast test on an old project -- rendered it in 3.5-minutes. Used to take almost 30-minutes on the old computer. I'd say it was worth it! Karl Larsen
Any idea what I could have done wrong? I followed the instructions to the letter... Just like my last build you usually find out a few things you 'shoulda' done so once I get through all the basics I'll probably format the drive and start over. Karl Larsen
What I learned... If you have 24GB of memory when you install Win 7, the"hibernate" feature will allocate LOTS of HD space... The trick is to turn hibernate off. Now I have FAR more free space on my drive. AJLynn
Good catch. I'd completely forgotten that one. My only computer that hibernates only has 4gb.
Karl Larsen
I never hibernate And I'm not sure I can understand the need to!
AJLynn
It's for power saving. I use it on laptops but for desktops I just power down when I won't be using it for a long time. But with an SSD, waking would be fast - I can see how it would be useful.
beestee
Recoving from a soft shutdown (low power state) on an SSD is faster than recovering from hibernation on an HDD. Even booting from a full shutdown on a system with the OS installed to the SSD does not take so long that it would be annoying, in fact I almost find that each time I boot up it justifies the purchase. It takes longer on my latest i3 build to warm up the UEFI on the mobo than it does to warm up Windows 7, and that is just because there has to be a time delay for human reaction to access the UEFI! EDIT: Forgot the whole reason I was posting in the first place. The i3 I mentioned above, I did the same thing. Ran WinDirStat and found Hibernation to be the culprit. I have 16GB of RAM in that system and the OS is installed on a 40GB SSD! I had less than 5% disk space left, thus the reason I ran WinDirStat Edited September 29, 2011 by beestee
Karl Larsen
AJ... The computer has been utterly fantastic, except for one thing I can't even begin to comprehend! When I do a render, in 3DS 64bit or in SolidWorks 64bit, my task manager physical memory usage will NOT exceed 3.25-3.27gb of memory, and I have 24gb installed???? All 12-threads of the processor max out but that memory thing has me wondering... Hope you have some good ideas for pointing me in the right direction and, thanks again in advance!
AJLynn
It might just be that your renders don't need more. Alternatively, depending on which renderer you use, I do believe there is a memory limit function in the render settings in Max... I don't have a computer with Max on hand to look at but I believe it's under System...
