Greg Law
How does the i7 990 extreme stack up. OC to 4 gig hz against a Xeon. I just got one with a Quadro 4000 and 24 gig of ram. I was just wondering how it would compare in rendering and display proformance.
Slinger
Depends what Xeon you are comparing t to. The good thing about the i7-990 is they are cherry-picked fab from the factory and many people have no issues OC'ing them well over 4ghz on air with minimal increase in voltage. Slinger
Also you can throw a i7-990x in any X58 mobo. Some boards refuse to run Xeons, so I see that as a plus as well for the 990x.
Greg Law
This is the one I was looking at. But it was $500.00 more. I'm more interested in screen proformance than rendering time. I'm building a render slave with the parts I replaced. It was a i7 950. Intel QUAD XEON E5450
AJLynn
I would not buy that Xeon. It will give you much less performance than a $600 i7-980 6-core. Much less. It's a 3.0GHz Core 2 Quad. Even two of them on one motherboard would not equal a single i7-980.

For the I7 990X, this is a HUGE cpu. My workstation is a Z800 with actually only one X5690 (equal to the 990X)...it's powerful, i hope be able to buy the second one quickly! So i can imagine what could be a 990 OC @ more than 4.0ghz!!! Let us know if you buy it... M.
