erkutacar
hey ive got a funny problem with the light exclude option.. for some reason an object i exclude from shadow calculation still casts shadow eventhough i had also disabled "cast shadows" from object properties.. ive got a square frosted glass(25cm x 25cm x 1cm) in front of an IES light and i dont want the edges of the glass to cast shadow on the ceiling.. in fact i dont want the glass to cast any shadows at all.. even if i make it clear glass edges still cast shadows.. here is how it looks: and this is with the light model layer disabled: i want the light to look like this... the only way i can achieve this is to make glass IOR 1.. then its completely invisible even with two spherical photometric lights turned on, it still has a crisp shadow.. AubreyM
Do you have "affect Shadows" checked in the glass material?
erkutacar
there is no affect shadows in material inputs.. its arch&design material.. i use iray... refraction 1, refract glos 1, ior 1.52, thin-walled is checked...
AubreyM
Sorry, my bad. I assumed you were using vray. Boy do I feel dumb I don't use Mental ray much anymore, I have not used the Arch & Design materials in a long time so I'm not going to be of much help. erkutacar
but i dont think its a material issue.. when u disable an object from shadow casting, no matter what the material it should not cast shadows
Scott Schroeder
Select the glass object, go to the object properties of the geometry itself, and uncheck cast shadows. Don't do this with lights and include/excludes or even worry about it in the material settings. Simply set the piece of geometry to not cast shadows. IES lights in Mental Ray can be quite a pain with inclusion/exclusions.

erkutacar
hey scott.. i guess its a thing with iray.. coz u know physically its not possible ive tested the settings in a new scene again no result.. but then i switched to mental ray, and without doing any settings at all here is the result: so what do u think? erkutacar
yes i just checked, as i thought iray doesnt support any settings on light shadows or inclusion/exclusion and object shadow settings.. gotta use mental again for this project
