selos69
Hi Guys, It's that time to upgrade again....! I was wondering if the performance for V-Ray related tasks would be comparable between a dual Xeon 5680 and an i7 980x with another i7 980x as a slave? AJLynn
It depends. Either way you have the same total amount of CPU power - 40GHz of total cores, from the same family and generation. So you need to consider other factors. E.g., distributed bucket isn't quite as fast as all buckets on one PC because of the overhead, but farming entire frames is nearly as fast. A very powerful single box makes for very quick text renders, but you might want to be able to have the render node do render jobs while you do other work on the workstation. It's a matter of personal preference.
Tommy L
No contest, get two PC's.
selos69
Thanks for the input guys. I assumed that distrubuting isn't as fast as having all buckets on one PC. Can you explain what you mean by 'farming' Andrew? Is it not the same as distrubuting? Now the last question - 980x or wait for the 3960x?
