IGES file into separate components/assemblies

Hi, I just received an IGES file, its huge.. No surprises.. And takes ages to read in.. As I need to animate the file I've got to get the individual parts of the model to separate out.

What is the best way to do this? When i bring it into max, it comes in as a big single coloured jumbled mess. When I open the IGES file in Rhino, its components are separated by display colour..

What kind of workflow are others using..?

Thanks

Import the file into max either using the format OBJ or FBX import one object at a time If your gonna import the file or use this file in a currant scene then i would check you have the same units setup as your currant scene. Make sure none of the names/materials are the same because you mite get a conflict when importing them!

Thank you datacrasher.. :).. I basically did that.. I'm just wondering whether there is a less laborious way of doing this.. ? Is there a setting in the IGES file, that would separate components out when imported, or a setting in Rhino/Max, that would recognise component colours and separate them into layers or something?

Just wondering of there is an easier way..?

i don't use Rhino so i don't know if there is another way. If you have the knowledge of the programming language then maybe you can create a plugin to do it a lot faster.

you can only put them in layer(s) when they are imported into max if you do have an option in Rhino maybe i don't know.
