jfharper
So I'm trying this out and am having difficulty adjusting things down so the scene doesn't look washed out...is it supposed to look washed out until I get the final rendered images into post where I then adjust the gamma to my liking? This could make it hard to render an image and see what needs to be changed if I have to keep going to post. Or is it just a matter of adjustments for the materials and lights and such to get things where I want them...it's kind of tough starting out on this. I can see how the GI and lighting look better with the gamma correction, just getting it back from a washed out look is tough...hard to get the contrast back. Also, is saving to 32 bit targas OK? John Dollus
if you are looking to adjust your exposure in post, you need a higher bit depth than targa can provide. Vrimg, exr or tif work well. targa is 32 bit (8 bits per RGB + 8 bit Alpha) and does not store the higher bit depth information you need when adjusting exposure. LukeC
Are you using the vray frame buffer. You need to use this so it'll display your render correctly. For an overview on a 2.2 setup which may help solve your problem have a look at James Shaw's blog http://www.jamesshaw.co.nz/blog/?p=

jfharper
Thanks. Yeah, I'm doing all that and using the VFB...I'll switch to tiffs. I was just wondering about some general things like when people first started using gamma 2.2 did they find things washed out, or did they just learn to adjust things accordingly when building the scene. Francisco Penaloza
if you are using all the correct setting you should not see washed out images, the idea of Gamma correction is to get a balanced image, not dark (like with not gamma activated) and not washed out (incorrect settings) Thing to take in consideration is your textures, look at your max option to always set the gamma to 2.2 on loading images, unless it is an hdri, and to have a correct workflow always use exr or hdr format to save your image. archigem
So I'm trying this out and am having difficulty adjusting things down so the scene doesn't look washed out...is it supposed to look washed out until I get the final rendered images into post where I then adjust the gamma to my liking? About your basic and very confusing question...: the gamma- If you are using the VFB and still getting the washed up image, then first make sure that you unchecked the sRGB button. If still you get the washed up image then you must've been applying the gamma twice. You need to understand that there are many ways to put the gamma 2.2 or whatever you are using, in the scene. The point is you have to apply the gamma only once. and then you can see the final effects in the VFB itself. And I think if you want a real raw image for post processing then use either the vrimg raw image or .exr image. otherwise usual jpg will do the trick. Stephen Thomas
You have to make sure all your diffuse colours are linear too, if you have materials with no bitmaps. You can do this by putting them inside a VrayColor map and setting the gamma parameters to Specify - 2.2.
