Jack,

Do you have maybe a screengrab of what your scene looks like?

If its like I think it is I'd try and create the effect separate from your main render. Create your lights (depends on your render engine, either a vray plane light or self-illum object of some kind to give you some dimension) and put a plane over them. Then animate a geometry deformer on the plane, either a noise modifier or a displace with animated noise map would work well. If you are animating your sea then use the same techniqe/map for both. Then apply a material with a slightly burred highlight and play with your refraction settings. Should give you what you need and should render fast. Merge or XRef camera from main file, render to elements and keep the reflection layer. Keep the lights on an alpha and use something like trapcode in AE for the 'beams' of light.

Another approach would be to use Vray environment Fog.

In fact there's a whole host of approaches, tricky to say without seeing your scene.

 

And Datacrusher, please dont post such ridiculous wrongness.

Using photometric lights with web ies parameters for this would be both ridiculous and wrong. Which particular ies were you thinkng? Nice.ies perchance? Instructing use of a parametric light in an emulation of an environmental effect demonstrates a lack of understanding both the question and the subject matter. Please do not cloud issues by posting nonsense. People who are new to 3d often land on these pages and assume a degree of knowledge from people posting answers to questions. You DO NOT HAVE THAT KNOWLEDGE. I looked at your responses to questions on these boards by filtering your posts only. Time and time again the answers you provide are under-informed and mis-leading at best.

And Ill leave your grammar out of it.

Wrong try again. You can use again Photometic lights for any scene you want it is not particular what you thinking. I have autodesk 3ds max certificate so before you try and school me go and learn more about Photometic lights and not just what the manual and reference says lol. Oh i don't have the knowleage i have more knowleage then a newbie like you. Just because you don't like my answers then that's too bad little boy. i have over 5 years in max and read more then you could ever understand about max i was taugh by the best Michele Bousquet. Your the only one misleading people

The more I think about this, the more I think you need to render a series of passes, it will be much easier and quicker to render than getting it in a single beauty pass.

and how would that speed up Jack's render it's won't moron it will just slow it down. the amount of thing you have in your scene max has to calclate that and max will take longer to render

Using passes is great. There is never a project where I don't use them The thing to be careful about though is that some people think that rendering in passes saves you time. That is usually true on larger projects, but on small quick rendering projects it can sometimes be faster to just make the changes in 3d and render

Imagine you have a scene with 3 lights. Then imagine you turned all but one on and hit render. Then repeat the process with the other two lights. In Photoshop or AE, you simply layer one over the other and use 'screen' transparency. It'll blend the lights back together as if you rendered the image with them all on originally. This gives you the ability to do things like levels adjustment or color balance. (Sometimes when you use warmer colors in the highlights and cooler colors in the dark regions, it looks nice.)

 

I've done most of my rendering in Lightwave but the 3d app doesn't really matter.

As much as I dont want to, Datacrasher be very careful. Tom is very experienced and highly respected on this and other forums. I have been following many of your replies and I have to agree with Tom. Whilst your answers are very detailed, more often than not they either totally miss the mark or are just plain wrong.

 

Tom is well within the guidlines in asking for moderation with regards to you responces. Please keep this professional.

Please do not ban datacrasher. I've been watching men behaving badly, black adder, southpark so much that its starting to lose it's edge. Like, black adder, i must have seen every episode at least 10 times. Every now and then, i come here to the forums, and i read the thread where he participated, and LFMAO.
