Extending the power supply cables- how long can I go?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am thinking of modifying my PC and more specifically- the power supply cables. What I want to do is keep the power supply at approximately 1 meter distance from the PC box. For that reason I need to extend most of the cables coming out of it so that they can reach the PC box and the motherboard.

Now, I see they sell 0.3 metres extension cables on-line. My question is though- what if I was to modify the extension cable myself and make it 1 meter by cutting and soldering additional wires. Would the motherboard still get the electricity it needs? Is there a limit as to what the extension cables should be?

It's not just about extending the 24 pin cable, it's also the cables for the graphics card, hard drives etc. I am doing the whole thing for aesthetic reasons- I'd like to keep the power supplies separately and out of sight.

Any thoughts?

Thanks guys.

Your going to chop your computer apart and solder it back together for aesthetic reasons? Really? Sounds crazy to me. Most people that want a pretty computer just go out and buy a mac.

No mate. Here's the thing- I am about to build a new render farm soon. 2-3 new PCs. I was thinking of getting a bookshelf where the main hardware will be (motherboard, CPU, RAM, Hard Drives). The bookshelf will be placed on my desk and under my desk I will keep the power supplies. Now, I can't do much about the power supplies, they already are an ugly piece of hardware but everything else will be arranged quite nicely.

In short- don't want to see the power supplies, they need to stay hidden.

So, I need to extend the cables.

As for the Mac suggestion- I couldn't care less about it. The main purpose of the render farm is rendering 3D projects. Powerful and cheap.

Take care.

ok. not sure I quite follow though. Do you mean to have the motherboards bolted onto a bookcase? Use the bookcase as a chassis to carry multiple boards?

What you are trying to do is a makeshift rackmount system. I'd assume that you can get longer cables, if not then you can buy male/female extensions to make your psu's remote. I think its going to be pretty ugly though, all drives and cables sticking out all over.

You're going to have to have a cooling solution also. Cooling is built into a case, they are designed for air flow. Its a bit of a gamble when for a bit more you could spring for a rackmount and customize it yourself.

Yes, that is my plan. My current render farm is housed in a metal filling cabinet which I bought and customised myself. It is fairly large though and just doesn't look right these days.

I will make the new one much nicer, only this time will spend more time looking for the right solution.

I've got to run to a meeting but I have friends that are crazy casemod people and do all kinds of stuff. They have a website but I can't remember off the top of my head.

edit:http://www.austinmodders.com/

go check out there site and go through the mods. you will probably find a guide to do exactly what you are talking about.
