sleipnir
Season greetings for all, I'm doing a rendering of offices buildings placed around a sort of "artistic square", a space that is supposed to be populated by artists showing their work (painters, sculptors, etc) and people around watching. That space will have palm trees all around and canvas sails attached to them (see picture example) I don't know how to model a realistic canvas sail, the ones I try (a simple triangle shaped surface) look flat and not very convincing. Also, where can I find libraries with artists and their stuff like the ones I need to populate the square?. Any help will be greatly apreciated Diego
AubreyM
For the sails I would use the cloth modifier and a wind effect to get it to look realistic. I think I remember seeing a collection that had stuff like artist easels, I think it may have been evermotion. Not sure about 3d artist peeps though. Most of that sort of stuff would be fairly easy to model though, not the peeps but the brushes, easels, canvases etc.
SgWRX
to me those donn't look to bad. on the material, you could add a bump map. maybe a mix of speckle and then standard noise that is very large like 150 units or something. have the noise map maybe white and very close to white like 255 and 245. if you have this slight surface bump, you could also add some variation if you catch the light by making the material slightly reflective but not very glossy

sleipnir
Thank you guys for your help. I imagine the cloth modifier is the more realistic approach although I'm not familiar with it but I'll check for tutorials. I liked very much the turbosmooth for it seem so easy and fast. Can I add a wind effect to it? The real problem will be the damn artists, I haven't found anything so far :-(
AubreyM
No I don't think that the wind effect works on the turbo smooth modifier. There are a ton of tutorials on it and it really is easy to use. I assume that you want to use 3d peeps for the artists. In that environment they would be dressed pretty much as everyone else. You may have to do a little texture work for some pain/ink stains but they don't have to have white coats and those little black french berets. Get some rigged 3d people and position they as you want. If you can't get rigged models then find some that are standing/sitting with an arm raised, with a little positioning and creative camera work I would bet you could fake it. If on the other hand you wanted to do RPC peeps then gather some friends and get your camera out
sleipnir
I guess you're right, they don't have to be in aprons or have berets :-) I have to do one general view from top and the rest will be pedestrian views. If the sails cover the space below on the general view then I'd prefer not to use 3d people and only pictures for the pedestrian views so I have more chances to find the right characters. Thanks again Aubrey and happy new year
