AR for onsite montages ?

I just watched a YouTube video of a guy has released an app for people visiting twin tower site. It silloets the towers on the iPhone and tells you to lines them up.

Seems like a good idea.

So I was thinking as I do, why can't this be done for clients, the model exported and a simple onsite App that lets them point and shoot.

Could be useful for local residence to look at what the building in the area will look like and they might not kick up such a fuss.

A good idea?

Ive already looked at doing this. I can easily do for large sites but as gps accuracy is at best 5-10m then it doesnt work for smaller sites. It could be done with transmiter markers to triangulate position but this isnt a neat solution. The process is pretty straightforward and in a lot of situations the building used for visuals is emminently suitable as is.

With a little bit of coding based on distance the model can even be obscured by foreground.

As an addendum if you can find identifiable points on the landscape or positioning of building you can use image recognition to align but this tends to only work from specific vantage points and is at best ropey.

I have looked at AR for a games app but with regard to arch viz I think it would be better to do the images and tell the viewer to visit those locations. The images can be much lower resolution than we normally create and atleast we have control over the composition and quality of the render AND avoid alot of coding.
