Panelized Cladding

I'm trying to find a way to easily panelize a wall. Somewhat similar to picture below. I've looked at the Floor Generator script from cg-source.com. Seems to work well on floors (horizontal surfaces) but not vertical surfaces unless i'm doing something wrong. I usually model in Revit so the walls are already in position, they just need to be "panelized".

Any quick methods?

Use the sub object mode of an edit poly to select edges and connect them. If you don't hit the button for connect and instead hit the menu next to the button you can control the number of connections and if they are even or skew to the middle, edge, etc...

After you establish your lines on the surface grab all faces you want to make a panel from and inset by a gap/grout distance. without deselcting, hit ctrl+i to invert and then extrude by local normal and you should be able to keep your wall thickness the same and carve gaps into the wall for panels.

If you additionally change the material ID's to a different number then your "grout" can be one color and the panels another by using a myulti-sub material.

I hope this is clear. It should be an easy process. Good luck!

Corey,

Thanks for info. I know of this method, yes it is quite easy in principle, but time consuming compared to the floor generator script when you are doing large facades. I guess I'm looking for a script, or better yet the floor generator script being used on vertical surfaces. Has anyone used the FG script on vertical shapes?

Brett, I think you can get floor generator to work for you if you:

1. In Edit Poly mode Detach (copy) the faces of a wall (you'll need to do this one wall at a time).

2. Rotate the detached/copied faces 90 degrees (parallel to ground plane).

3. Run Floor Generator to get your desired panelization solution.

4. Rotate the Floor Generator Panels into position.

So, there are a few extra steps, but still might be a quick solution.
