monkeyman905
I am currently working in a scene with a few displacement maps been used on 9 different objects. Each map is 2k and they are 3 different maps. Each map is used on 3 objects (that makes the 9 objects). I set off a render and the time was 90hrs in total after the 3 passes and final render, without any displacement maps it was 3hrs so i need to fix this. I currently have it set where the maps are in the displacement slot on the vray material. so 1. would i save render times using a displacement mod in 2d or 3d mapping, than in a vray mtl. 2. Instead of copying an object if i made it an instance/referance instead would this also lower render times? Thanks Edited January 18, 2012 by monkeyman905

Thanks it would definitely save time using vray displacement mod..and 2d is faster than 3d..and also the bit size if you are 256, or 512 or 1024...and for sure make a difference if x ref..i am not sure how it will work ( never tried that before) but if instance instead of copy..it would still take same amount of time... also..when render for the first time it would usually take longer for it will compiling all objects for calculation, but the second time if you did not change the objects in the scene it would render faster. subburb
i would say that in the latests builds of Vray there's not so much rendertime difference between 2d and 3d disp. i've read somewhere that 3d is the way to go as it have been improved a lot in latest builds. note that the Vraydispmodifier, in 3d mode, have pretty the same settings than the global displace settings in vray (via map). if you've several materials on your object (multi or fusion) and want the displace only on one of them, then you can't use the modifier, as it impacts the whole object. If you use the map, you'll be able to apply displace on only one material of the object. The modifier allows you, too, to have different displace settings in your scene. If Using maps, they will all use then same global displace settings. Hope it helps !
