henryjpgoss
I'm having a little trouble getting rid of noise in the shadows when light form an HDRI sky is shining through glass. (Image attached) I have reduced this quite a bit by increasing the subdevisions of the Vray dome light which has the HDRI loaded into it but even with 60 subdivs I can't get rid of it all together. Tried loads of different render settings including the default vray 2.0 in 3ds max with bruteforce and it's not quite there. I'm not using the highest res HDRI in the world. Could it be that a higher res HDRI map could sort this? Any suggestions gratefully received
RyderSK
I battle the same problem, I love HDRi lightning, but for interiors, it's pain in the ass. I never go higher than 32 for subdivisions though, even that is overkill. The resolution isn't solution, actually smaller better, but then you loose shadow sharpness. Is that white material glossy ? If so, turn up it's glossy subdivisions to high number, like 40 to even 64. This is the setup I use, but the render times are just stupid. Other solution is to calculate the prepass without the glass.
henryjpgoss
Many thanks Juraj, I'll give that a try. Some of the surfaces are glossy so that's a good idea. Interesting that you say hi res HDRI's aren't better as it seems that some of the free ones are much lower res than the commercially available ones. Prepass with no glass is a good solution for now. Thanks again.
RyderSK
http://www.hdrlabs.com/ Head over there for good explanation :- ). Commercial HDRi are high-res, so you can get sharp reflections, and even use it as background, but the resolution doesn't help with illumination.
