Tim Nelson
I think the Geforce 5900 XT by BFG technologies might be a good choice. It comes overclocked. Plus, I think its even less than $250.
Crazy Homeless Guy
imho.... save your money and get one of the geforce's around $100. whatever you buy will be outdated shortly amyway.
Hulag
I have to disagree with crazy homelss guy, it depends on the amount of geometry you have to handle. I would go for a Radeon 9700 Pro.

Crazy Homeless Guy
it is just my opinion, at least for today. anyway, i would go with a nvidia card over an ati any day. ati cards have potential, but from what i understand they are typically poor in build quality. i had an ati once for a week or 2, then it went back in exchange for an nvidia card. as for prices..... http://www.pricewatch.com/m/mn.aspx?i=37&f=
Hulag
Well I have heard a lot of complaints from people who use ATI cards with Max. Seems like people have the most success using Nvidia cards. I had the opposite problem, 3ds Max 6 would crash with my Nvidia GeForce FX 5800 Ultra. I replaced it with a Radeon 9700 Pro and it worked great. Now I don't use 3ds Max anymore and moved to Lightwave 7.
Jason Matthews
I have a 9800 pro and I have no problem with it handeling anything that max or viz can through at it, and iI have had it handeling 800,000 polygons (trying to break it). Cesar R
Does anyone know if you can put a Quadro card the 1000go I think, in a toshiba laptop?
xgarcia
Cesar - I'm unaware of being able to soft-mod any video card in Mac. In windows though, it depends which card it is. The Geforce3 was the last true soft-mod hack (it really converts to a Qaudro DCC simply through registry settings). Geforce4's and up, nvidia built the chips separately on the assmebly line. There are some people here in this forum that will swear by hacking their GeforceFX's and Geforce4's but the truth is you can not get all the true Quadro features that are on the real cards. I've never tried nor heard of soft-modding laptop quadro cards - they might be separate animals all together from the full size AGP ones. You can find more information at www.guru3d.com. BTw - I stopped using my quadro hack 3 days ago because for some reason windows XP service pack 2 doesn't like it - screen started crashing so I'm back to my geforce3 - no biggie since I don't do 3D all day long - I pump cad now (working on IDP credits)!! xgarcia
Does anyone know if you can put a Quadro card the 1000go I think, in a toshiba laptop? I'd imagine you have to contact toshiba to check that. Or you could google it - you'd be suprised what you find with google. I google 90% of my technical support problems. Cesar R
" I pump cad now " I am the same way lately, I am working on my drafting skills. I have discovered I am very technical. I am now more interested in 3d modeling for architecture projects (BIM style) than on 3D. BTW I am gettin MAX 7 next week !!!

kris
We had similar thread about graphic cards few times. As I sad before best solution and by that I mean best price/performance index is to buy Nvidia 5900FX and modify it to quadro 3000. I have two modified 5900FX and one Titanium4600 and they are much faster now becouse you can use maxtreme drivers from Nvidia site. These drivers are exclusively for Quadro cards and they boost your performance in Max aditional 70%. check http://www.guru3d.com for instructions how to modify your card.
