I just posted 4 screenshots of a few of the new areas on the new version of CGarchitect launching on Feb 6. They are on our Facebook page wall here: http://www.facebook.com/cgarchitect Like the page and head over to the wall to check them out.

We just moved our Release Candidate off our test servers to our live servers today and will finish testing this and next week. The site will stay up until launch, but posting on the forums will likely be suspended for a few days before launch to lock the database down while we transfer content into the new system

Hope you like it. It's been in development for about 6 months now. I'm pretty excited and can't wait to have it launch.

Jeff will there be an iphone app for the new site?

The new site works more or less ok on an iPad (iOS), but not out of any specific efforts. So in that sense yes it will work on iOS but not for image uploading as iOS does not support file browsing from the browser. As far as a dedicated iPhone/iPad app goes, no there will not be one developed now or likely in the foreseeable future as so little traffic currently comes from mobile. I actually just looked into that this week and only around 2% of all of our traffic is mobile platforms. Around 1.5% on iOS. As an aside, the site looks pretty ugly on Android as their browser is really poorly implemented and does not render CSS properly. Even FF on Android does not render correctly or the same as it does anywhere else.

Targeting mobile is a VERY expensive task as there are so many platforms and sizes, browsers. It's bad enough just trying to get a site to work on IE, FF and Chrome. A typical iOS app will cost around $10-40K to develop and the new site is already an $80K project. Given how little ROI there would be, I don't see a mobile app happening any time soon.

The forums are a different matter. Right now you can use Tapatalk to view the forums on your mobile device and that works pretty well. Within the next month or two after launch, we'll be doing a major version upgrade on the forums which will bring a free iPhone app to browse the forums. We did not do it for launch as it has the potential to break a lot of the integration code that was developed. It has to be tested and we did not have time to do that with the new site launch as it is already 3 months later than expected. From the analytics on Tapatalk there are around 3-4 users daily who access the site using that app. LOL. Out of the 250,000 unique visitors each month that's 0.001% of the total traffic, so you can see why it's so little of a priority. I wish more people used it as I'd love to develop one, but right not, does not make a whole lot of sense.

One could argue if we developed a really cool app more people would use and download it, but it would either have to be a paid app, which I assume most would not purchase, or there would have to be advertising in a free app to offset the development costs.

Anyway that's the scoop on mobile!

Jeff,

Great new site.

Tell me what am I doing wrong, I am not receiving any emails from my posts or thread comments ? I receive the pro of the week ok. This comes from your @cgarchitect.com domain which is in our spam software allow white list. Is the forum email coming from a different email address / domain which I need to add into the allow list ?

thanks.

Neil

Hi Neil,

Sorry for the delay, I just spent the last 7 days in bed with the worst flu in my life. Nothing has changed with the forums since the new site launch that would affect you receiving emails. All email newsletters come from feedback@cgarchitect.com and I've set the forums to the same thing.

Cheers,

Jeff
