Noise
I have a model of approx 130,000 faces but, when I move, rotate, open, save etc.. it takes 10 to 15 minutes to carry out the command. The model was made by someone else in Acad with an unnecessary amount of detail but grinds to a halt on the simpliest of tasks. I have optimised it as much as possible, deleting all geometry which is not needed. Does anyone know why this happens and how to possibly fix it ? Spec: Dual 1.9 processor AMD, 3Gb ram, 128 Nvidia Quatro graphics card. Max 6 SP1 Thanks N
mbr
Personally, I think Max is a dog when it comes to Open GL performance. It is so slow compared to Maya or FormZ. Make sure you don't have the Polycounter active, that slowed my machine to a halt (I didn't figure it out), and when I turned it off, the problem was gone (well, at least it was back to normal). xgarcia
wow - if you have time, remodel some of the scene. Probably a time issue though. Do you have latest version of maxtreme drivers loaded?
Brian Cassil
You could try using the optimize modifier. Depending on the type of geometry, it may not be appropriate for your model, but it's worth a try.
Scott Schroeder
Also make sure that there is nothing that is frozen in your scene. Sometimes Crappy-CAD likes to import hidden and frozen layers. More so in Max 6. Also crappy-CAD can put in extreme verts and objects and are way outside of your viewing area and this can cause super havoc on your system. I would re-model in max if you have the time. Importing anything other than reference linework from crappy-CAD is just asking for disaster.
skogskalle
130 000 faces doesnt seem THAT much.... It shouldnt take you comp that long to rotate it anyways... not sure whats wrong though... Do you have many textures showing in the views? if so disable them... Also... select allt objects youre not working with at the moment and check "show as box" in the properties menu. this always speeds things up. another thing... working in one maximised view at the time is alot faster than working with all four views showing at the same time. Noise
Thanks for your replies. I have found a work around to the problem ! I always import acad models into max with all entities remaining individual - this resulted in the awful behaviour of max and the machine. So, when I imported the model using 'combine object by layer', it worked normally. I love doing 3D but, sometimes I could do without the mind bending silly problems that invade my workflow from time to time. Now, all I have to do is make up 3 weeks of lost time ! Daniel
Well max isn't really good at handling many many objects, best thing is to attach stuff that will stay together anyway. Daniel
