errrr....dumb question.

Well, this could be a dumb question, but i would like to hear some tips.

Im doing a project right now, its a public square, im wondering how you guys do the texture for large floor areas, i mean, this public square is a large area, a big plane, but it has various floor materials and designs (floor patterns), for example, it could have a certain tile pattern on the sidewalk, but then it has another pattern design and material near the trees areas, or in the middle of the square, and so on.

I havent do anything like this before, so far ive only made a house or apartment or building floor, which is just 1 tiled material, so i dont know how to start.

should i make on 3dMAX different planes or volumes for each floor type? and then texture each one of them?, or just one large plane will do it, and i just do 1 really big texture on Photoshop with the different patterns and stuff.

Thanks, any tip will be appreciated.

Make them individual objects. This way you can control each one and keep the file size of the maps down. You'll also have less problems rendering and less visual errors (the map would have to be a very hi res image to look good, but if it's cut up, they can be smaller and look good).
