Ambient Occlusion and Displacement maps

Hi all,

I am rendering a rectangular carpet with Displacement map and so far it looks good. When I do a separate pass for ambient occlusion the AO is calculated only for the rectangular shape (naturally) and not for the individual strands on the carpet (again naturally).

My question is- is there a way to calculate the AO for everything (the main shape and the individual strands) so that the level of realism increases.

I do my AO with an override material (VRayLightMtl with VRayDirt map inside)

Thank you.
