Jure
B. enjoy your extra time! -end- Hey! I do pretty much the same thing in LW. However I apply dirt pass as overlay not as multiply. IMO overlay works better because it only darkens image where dirt pass is dark and light areas act like transparent.

micco
That is a very good tutorial!! But what if you have something reflective? Like a mirror or somwthing made with RayTrace material. Do you know how to make it reflect the ambient light (colours) of the other objects?
Jure
Ah yes sorry, I meant the other way around. I use multiply mode instead of overlay. You tried that?

dissidently
Great tutorial, but you've forgotten one thing that saw me getting lost for hours trying to work out what I was doing wrong. If you're modelling is scaled on real world units it needs to be shrunken an enormous amount before the effect of the dirtmap is of some use. Prior to the shrinking nearly everything is a completely washed out white, with maybe some darkness in corners. So if anyones looking at pure white dirtmap renders that's the reason. Does anyone know a fix for this other than destroying the scale of everything?

jonel
For reflections, there can be a good use of a Reflection pass, with scanline or brazil or mRay (these two are quicker) and in photoshop put that layer above with a screen blending. It looks good enough, just tweak the opacity a bit. btw, the most used blending combinations for ambient occlusion pass layer (for me) are Multiply and Softlight, both with ~50% opacity. Overlay blending boosts too much contrast. As I mentioned, it's not necessary, it's the best combination for me, 'cause I mostly use Scanline pass with materials and reflections and AbmOcc passes over it. Sometimes, there is a need for a radiosity or some quick GI pass, but with no regathering. It has to be tweaked a bit, cause there is no combination that can work best for all kind of scenes (in my opinion).
nisus
Hi All, Any ideas how to apply this technique for animation (preferable without all the pswork...)? I'm thinking in the direction of projecting the images on the model using a camera map of the passes e.g. but perhaps there is a more easier way??? rgds nisus
