Save the material to new file. Reset scene, open material editor. Double click that material from material browser to make it available in the scene, then use bitmap collector in utilities panel. Notice that different steps needed depends on using slate or compact editor.

Be careful when using bitmap collector though, last time i heard max 2011 didnt do it properly, so i suggest you use replacement like Martin Breidt's MB Resource Collector or soulburn script.

This method maybe outdated and there must be a quicker way to do it via maxscript that i'm not aware of. If you've found simpler way to do it please let us know.
