System Ideas

Recommended Posts

Marc,

I was thinking along the same lines. My ideas was to put a new thread or forum to survey what each of our guys are using. It may be interesting to see what we get.

Even though I have assembled a couple of AMD's, I really don't know them well. My main focus has been on Intel. Since this afternoon I have been reading about the AMD's. The more I read the more confused. The comment about the lack of chipset support on the AMD's is ringing on my ears. Searching for the right motherboard to use with this Opteron I found the following article:

Now, I have more techno questions......!

Thanks

Elliot

More on the same

Do a google on DK8N there is a million very interesting articles on this board and the Opteron chip. I can see that if you are a computer geek it could be interesting to be on the leading edge of this saga. However, if you just want to do renderings then maybe we should stick with Intel.

I am tempted to go with the Opteron.... I need to read more..... This will be a 180 degree change from two days ago. However, the Intel dealer in Boston got me very upset with their tactics. I don't want to be at the mercy of a little dealer who wants to play "Computer God" This is why I allways make my own computers... That way I can service them or destroy them what ever is more convenient..... Hi Hi

I am an old ham radio operator, I used to make my own radios and amplifiers because the same reasoning as with the computers..... !! Hi Hi

Thanks

Elliot,

Thanks for those articles. I have another concern that I'm wondering about. We have aroudn 60 people where I work, sharing the same server. I know you're still using your PC for building the models and rendering, but would there be any lagging effect due to traffic on the server, and aslo when the IT department is messing around with it? I'm just comparing my machine that I have right now at work, and my personal computer. Even though there is a world of differences between the two, it seams like my personal computer, even though it's a lot slower, performs better then my work computer sometimes. I wonder if that due to the imformation transfers from the server. Below is my work and personal computer. I just ordered 1gig more of RAM for my personal computer:

WORK:

Dual AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz Processors

1 Gb of Ram

Elsa Gloria III 64 mb Quadro2 Pro

Windows XP

PERSONAL:

P4 1.3 mhz

Nvidia GeForce2 mx 400 32mb

512mb RAM ( expanding to 1.5gig as soon as it arives)

Windows 2000

That's another thing. Dealing with Windows OS's, I've heard that VIZ/MAX runs better with certain ones

Marc,

I don't know the interfacing with the network on a system like the one on your office. On my small network I have no problems with mixing AMD's and Intel's.

My current machine is an OLD dual Xeon 1.4ghz and it still works good. I have the same Quadro 64 and run it with 2 gb. However, my laptop is starting to be faster on rendering.... Hi Hi

Thanks

Elliot

Why not 3.6 GHz?

For system I'd have two 36 Gb raptors in RAID 0.

You're never gonna use 4Gb memory, so I think 3Gb is ideal with WinXP with 3gb switch.

What monitors are you gonna get? I wouldn't go smaller than 20" (1600x1200). The new 23" widescreen monitors are great. HP sells them for $1,600...
