Aaron2004
Hey all, So I've decided to start toying with the Kinect to see what it can do for Arch Viz. I've seen enough videos and read enough to be partially won over. Does anybody have opinions on the use of this in the industry? I believe that the fact that we have access to such an inexpensive device that can help us visualize our models while scanning environments and even creating interactive architecture with robotics is certainly worth looking into. Are there any thoughts on the subject or where you see it leading? Has anybody had any experience with it yet? Aaron
Devin Johnston
I've always wished we could use the Kinect to scan a building or interior space and convert it to a usable model. I've seen some things that are close to this but there's nothing commercially available. I think it's more practical that an app will come out allowing us to scan objects, but the models I've seen it generate aren't extremely detailed but with good texture mapping maybe it doesn't have to be. Aaron2004
I agree, Devin. Things like 'KinectFusion' look awesome, but I think it's still a proof of concept. Hopefully we can get our hands on it sooner than later.
hockley91
I had a conversation with Autodesk about having it on the "Labs" at some point. They explained that right now, there's an issue with the scanning range regarding the Kinect device. But, that was back in August 2011...
