Greg Law
I have made a practise image for DOF. The problem I'm having is that there is a lot of noise in the DOF. From what I gather from reading threads here is that it involves DOF and MAX subdiv. The question I have is what is the maximum subdivions I should use. I have a good computer with I7 990 3extreme processor. Quadro 4000 card and 24gig ram, so I can use a lot of power. I have tried to attach the test image but it won't upload. I'm using a Vray physical camera Edited May 21, 2012 by Greg Law
Boris Horosavin
If you're using standard camera you can control depth of field effect from a Render Setup\Vray\Camera menu. Generally, you make DOF less grainy or smooth by increasing its subdivision from this menu. However, I like to leave some noise when using this effect, because it looks more natural. Also, you can always render Vray Z Depth layer from Render Elements menu. This way you can make a good DOF in the post, from Photoshop - it's quicker and easier to control the result. Boris Horosavin
Ah, one more thing. If you stick to Vray Physical Camera bare in mind that its DOF is very limiting and complicated to tweak, because it acts as a real physical camera. So, if you stick to it, and do not have enough experience, nor time or will to experiment I would really suggest you do DOF in post.
Tommy L
Do it in post for sure. Get a plugin for it, I use DOFpro. Looks better than the PS filter and is extremely realistic if you tweak it right. If you render DOF then you're stuck with what you render. And it can really bump up your render times.
Greg Law
I had a look at the DOFpro. Looks good, however the site says it won't work on a 64bit Photoshop. My one is 64 bit 5.5. Has this been upgraded to work? The 32 bit photoshop is an old Photoshop 7 . Will it work on that?
Greg Law
You learn something everyday. Looks like I do have a 32bit version of Photoshop 5. Must have loaded at the sametime as the 64bit version. So I'm waiting for the activation to come back from DOFpro to start using it. I can see this is a good way to go.

Nic H
fruitschulft lenscare is amazing as well - not sure if it works in photoshop though alongside a good 16bit zdepth it allows enormous flexibility epsecially on bokeh shapes and highlight control. Greg Law
Anyone had problems buying DOFpro. I paid for a copy 2 days ago and haven't heard back yet. I sent an Email asking what was going on and haven't had a reply.
Tommy L
He's usually very prompt (within 1 day) at responding to anything, especially new purchase. Maybe send him something from a different email address in case his spam filter is blocking you out.
Greg Law
All is well. Got my activation info. Now if only I can sort the uploading image problem I'm having here this week. I have been trying to upload an image on the work in progress forum which won't accept my image like on this thread the other day.
