Generating Vector files from character Photographs

Hi,

 

I am trying to create a series of 'cartony' character illustrations, very simple ones. I was wondering if anyone knew of any methods or useful pieces of software that would enable me to generate some vector files directly from a series of character photographic poses?

 

Aside from hand tracing in illustrator, does anyone have any other ideas? As i said, I am only looking to generate some very simple characters.

There is also the 'live trace' feature in illustrator which automates the process. The new CS6 version, 'image trace', seems even more powerful.

for silhouetted entourage, you don't need to be super precise. i usually load them up on cards in the viewport and just draw a spline over them in Max.
