Adding background in interior scenes outside windows!

Hello,

I have always rendered my interior scenes night and daylight with no background outside the windows! The daylight scenes made the glass of the window white and the night scenes made the glass of the window black!

Recently i tried adding a back ground outside the windows for example a view of a lake for a daylight scene but with no success in getting a nice render! Same for the night scenes, but with the night scenes i just got again the black window reflecting whats inside!

The usual way i add background to a scene exterior and interior is, i make a tube around the scene and a sphere! It is the most common way i presume! I change the object properties of the sphere to not be visible to camera and the tube properties not to be visible in reflections!

I always light my interior night scenes with photo metric lights and my interior daylight scenes with a daylight system! For materials to the glass of the window i use the ArchDesign SolidGlass (which i also tried using different glass materials to see if anything change but did not work).

I tried many things many ways but none give me a nice render of a night view of a city outside the window, or a nice daylight view!

If someone who has more experience give me some advice with this matter at hand!

Thank you in advance!

the daylight system is only meant to use for animating you're day into night scene don't use it to light you;re scene because you need to change the contrast, brightness etc in the Logarithmic

I would just use the normal lights to light up your scene. Then apply a background neither the eviroment map or add a box then applying a bitmap.

If you really need to use the daylight system then click on the motion panel then change the hours days and months and the time. When you move the hours like a 12 hour clock you will see the daylight system change turning day into night

Good lucky

Thank you for the tip Tony! Will try it in my next scene!

You havent answered to my problem, the problem here is adding background outside a window! Me explaining the way i light my scene is just to give you an idea of how my scene is set up!

This is a render i made and i need a background image outside the windows but i cant find a way to put one! Adding a box and adding the bit map outside wont work because there are two windows, on the left and right wall and i need to have a back ground covering both windows so a box on one side and one on the other wont do because the picture would be the same outside both windows and thats illogical!

Thank you!

you made you're question to long that's why in your first thread and you did not put a question mark

lets start again because i got confused the amount of detail you put in you're question. If you use the environment (8) key then it will let you set an background map.

so you want a map to like the real world when you walk outside the door you see the whole scene? I think the only to do this is by create about 4 boxes in the front view and one in the top then add a image to them.

Or

you create a half sphere then assign a map to it

I thought you want a one location map if you walk up-to the window then you see the environment

Hello Victor and Tony. I disagree in the fact the Daylight is only for animations, the MR Photographic exposure control is powerful. Although I am just an amateur in 3d stuff I consider Daylight gives good results.

Let's go back to the question. In a interior daylight scene. Just put a plane outside the window, apply an Arch&Design material with the bitmap on the Self Illumination slot and boost its multiplier, 10,000 or even more, just try. You need to do this for compensate the strength of the MrSun.

On the plane properties disable both cast and receive shadows, and also disable FG and Global Illumination calculations.

Hope I helped you.

everyone disagrees with something so that is the point of forums. but i don't think victor wants environment map in one location if he just sets up a Mr sun and sky then usually max will set up a physical sky automatically though i am using 3ds max 9 so i am not sure what they have changed in the higher versions

You can add a custom background if you drag the MR Physical Sky from the environment to the material editor, then put a bitmap on it and boost its output. This is most suitable for exteriors when you need to look around. I prefer photoshop though

Thank you all for you help!

One thing that will surely do the job is to fix the scene with a plane outside the window accordingly to one camera and then fix the scene accordingly to another!

Thank you all for your info! Will try and do my best and will post a render here so we can comment on the results!

Thanks Gary!

The scene was very helpful! I was doing ONE thing wrong! The window material! I was using a different type of material which reflected everything that was inside and did not allow the camera to see anything on the outside!

And thank you all again for giving me your own personal advice and helping me fix the problem!!!
