ok. So here's how it is. Ive been working on a project for 5 weeks. Day and night. A big one, broadcast animation for a big beer. Im happy with where its going. I speak to client tonight and show him comp. I have 30 max files in the bag, working on the final. Oh, oops, did I say final? That must be the boogie man at the door. I look at my test render and think "hey, yeah, that it, last wrinkle ironed out, now I can send the final animation to the farm".

This is a complex series of cloth animations that are collapsed to keyframes with every trick I know thrown in to make it look cool. I did nothing wrong, only wrong thing was to think...and I mean think, I didnt even say it....'nice, send to farm'.

And Max crashes with non-recoverable error.

This is not the first time. In fact I'd venture a guess that this happens EVERY time. Five weeks of no crashes, no glitches, even DR played ball all the way through. As soon as I think , just ****ing THINK that Im done then Max will crash.

grr.

It's a good time to bring up the fact that it's never a bad time to invest in setting up a nightly auto-backup of your working project folder. Set windows to create nightly backups, say 3-4 days of copies. Also set it to create a weekly backup, again I usually do 3-4 weeks.

Hard drives are cheap, non-recoverable crashes are not. I got a good 1tb backup drive for about $80, yeah, after the hard drive prices went up I know. But having many backups that I don't have to even think about creating, and are not of Max's Autobackup, has saved my bacon many times.
