ABK
Hi all, I'm wanting to create a snow dome in 3DS max. Any advice on the best way to simulate the snow swirling and landing? Antony
datacrasher
I would use the Blizzard or the snow then load the snow present then add a wind effect bind that to the snow you will have to mess about with the parameters until you get the effect you want but if you have the money then i would spend on a snow plugin Sorry my mistake you cannot load the presents on the snow because it's only work with some particle systems Edited June 18, 2012 by datacrasher
datacrasher
i would also try the vortex to make the swirling effect but i don't know much about this vortex it mite not give you the effect you need you could bind the snow the wind and the vortex together make sure you vortex and the PCloud binded together to make it work i cannot get the vortex to render maybe you can in the newer versions Good luck Edited June 18, 2012 by datacrasher
Tommy L
I dont have a snowdome in front of me to have a look at the physical dynamics of it, but I think you'd want to do 3 particle systems. One for random movement, one for a directional swirl and one for landing.
Simon Moir
Bet there's something useful here: http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/garyd/over_100_free_particle_flow_presets
Peter M. Gruhn
I posted one for a tradeshow booth a few years ago... here it is. http://forums.cgarchitect.com/34263-animate-snow-box.html. It was designed for bits of plastic in fan blown air, but it might make a good start.
Peter M. Gruhn
Ah... I missed the requirement for landing.
Peter M. Gruhn
OK, for landing... Get the UDeflector based on the item "snow". Animate bounce down to 0%, friction to 100% and Inherit Vel to 0%. Look also to the wind and give it a negative value to make the snow settle downwards. It looks like with the friction and velocity cranked to still, you don't have to mess with the wind turbulence "it's stirring, but they sticking".
