M V
Just wondering if anyone has had luck landing clients at trade shows? Is it worth a $500 investment to get a table at a trade show in order to meet new clients?
Tommy L
Nope. I went to a trade show and took along a 3d scanner, my reel, spheron and a bunch of other stuff. We were a hit, the most popular stand there. Didnt see any work from it. That said, you only need one client from it to be worth it.
Jeff Mottle
I'm always surprised that so few visualization studios don't have booths at Autodesk University. The place is full of architects. Granted those are not always the best or most profitable clients. More and more companies in the industry (software, hardware) are stopping tradeshows. The costs are huge and the returns are usually non-existant. At VisMasters/ArchVision we used to spend $50-60K to go to SIGGRAPH and almost never saw a measurable return. Even Chaos Group has decided to not have their own booth at SIGGRAPH this year. Instead they will be in partner booths instead.
Ernest Burden III
Chaos Group has decided to not have their own booth at SIGGRAPH this year... Wow. Of course they already have high market saturation.
John Dollus
at AU, they are always pumping the attendees with how they can do wonderful visualizations completely inhouse with only pressing a couple buttons so it would be a very tough sell. A regional tradeshow for $500 in a market where you do not already have a lot of personal contacts would greatly expand your opportunities but don't expect anyone to order work during the show. You are really paying $500 for access to the attendee mailing list after the show which could be well worth it but it will be up to you to follow up and work the list. As an alternative, you can look into purchasing a qualified contact list of your region but that usually will run you more than $500.
matthewspencer
Honestly in ID, we've gotten more contacts out of "schmoozy," fun trade shows like ICFF than "strictly business" trade shows like NeoCon. I wouldn't be surprised if it were the same story with arch and archviz.
