Brian Cassil
I'm working on a scene that is partly new and partly a merged model from an old scene. At this point the scene is almost 30 megs and there aren't even 100k polygons in it and no rpc content. I've worked with scenes over 30 megs before but they have always been several hundred thousand polys. I wouldn't be complaining at all except that these scene has gotten to the point that I can't seem to open it at all. I have to merge the file into a new file every time I go to re-open it. Any help would be appreciated.
Chad Warner
Try this: open up xref object dialog and hit the close button. Do the same in xref scene. Then, in the little white dialog box in the left bottom left corner, type gc() and hit enter. I have had serious problems with my files getting out of control size-wise, and this seems to fix it. At least temporarily. -Chad
Brian Cassil
Wow! I have no idea what I just did but it worked like a charm! My file size is now down to 5 megs, and I can re-open it in just a couple of seconds. Would you mind explaining a little bit about what I actually did. Embarrasingly, I have to admit that I didn't even know you could type in commands in that little white box down there. By the way after typing that in the resulting number was 5554768 (sounds like a fake telephone number, lol!) You are a stud Chad!
Chad Warner
Don't thank me...I have no idea what it does either. Check out this thread: http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/showthread.php?t=6655&page=1&pp=10&highlight=file+size Quizzy has an explanation as to what it does, but it doesn't really make sense to me. I'm just glad to see that I'm not the only one having these problems. -Chad

It is an area of memory set aside just for maxscript scriptervisible variables. Glad all went well.
