Jeff Mottle
A few weeks back I was working on something that required the display not to sleep or the screensaver to turn on. I just changed the Power Options in W7 to never put the computer or display to sleep. Now that I've changed it back, it never fully sleeps. The display goes black, but I can still see the mouse cursor. Any ideas how I might correct this? I need the computer to sleep so the video signal is cut which triggers the display to sleep. Dimitris Tolios
Some device or peripheral is probably "taking over" and not allowing your system to go to sleep. Type this and see what is preventing Windows to enter sleep state. From command prompt ; Type "powercfg -requests" to check what device and driver are preventing it to enter S1/S3. C:\users\administrator> powercfg -requests You should get 'none' or windows will tell you what device. Disable that device that is preventing it to enter S1/S3. Type "powercfg -availablesleepstates" to make sure S1/S3 is available. C:\windows\system32>powercfg -availablesleepstates --- Sometimes the sound card or other media drivers are acting weird because of media sharing. ofc disabling your sound card is not always a good idea Go to power options > Change advanced power settings (lower left "blue" hyperlink)> Multimedia Settings > When Sharing Media > Allow the computer to sleep. Report if you find what went wrong as I never had the issue personally, so I am not sure what could be wrong.
Jeff Mottle
Thanks Dmititris, Below is what I saw. I did set the advanced settings to allow it to sleep when sharing media. Not sure where this audio stream is coming from all of a sudden. Any thoughts? powercfg -requests DISPLAY: None. SYSTEM: [DRIVER] Creative X-Fi Audio Processor (WDM) (PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_000B&SUBSYS_00411 102&REV_04\6&1089e960&0&00100018) An audio stream is currently in use. [DRIVER] SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio (HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_11D4&DEV_989B &SUBSYS_10438372&REV_1003\4&18dbcfae&0&0001) An audio stream is currently in use. [sERVICE] \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\svchost.exe (CryptSvc) AWAYMODE: None. powercfg -availablesleepstates The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby ( S1 S3 ) Hiber nate Hybrid Sleep The following sleep states are not available on this system: Standby (S2) The system firmware does not support this standby state. Dimitris Tolios
Yeah, your sound blaster thinks that it is streaming media over your local network and stops the system from sleeping so that your libraries are available to the rest of your network... See the 2nd part of my 1st post...if that does not solve it, try to remove the permissions the driver has to prevent your system from sleeping using the following guide: http://www.quantexzone.com/index.php/guides/37-guides-s/86-xfi-ddl-sleep
Jeff Mottle
No joy. I edited the advanced setting, I did an OVERRIDE on both sound cards and confirmed it per the link you sent. In all cases as soon as it goes to "sleep" the screen goes dark, but the cursor is still there. I am thinking there must have been an auto driver update on the sound cards that is causing this all of a sudden. Any other ideas? Cheers, Jeff
Dimitris Tolios
If you have DD/DTS encode option enable, try to disable it. Also check all settings in the Power Management Features. Make sure Multimedia Sharing and Networking settings aren't preventing automatic S3 Sleep.
Jeff Mottle
ugg, man this whole thing reminds me why I hate Windows so much. I "think" I got sleep to work. I set the display to go to sleep in 1 min and the computer in 2, and once it hits 2 min it takes about 30 seconds and the computer goes to sleep permanently. I can't get the mouse or keyboard to wake it now. I have to power it on with the power switch. The first attempt however just runs the fans at 100% and hangs there. I have to power it down again, wait 15-20 seconds and then power it up and wait for Windows to "resume". Not sure why this is happening as I've not changed anything on this system since the issue started happening. Sometimes I can't wait for this system to die so I can get a MacPro to match my laptops, iPads and iPhones. Don't generally have issues with them like I do Windows. Looks like I'll have to just disable sleep and use a screensaver or something.
