braddewald
I'm still running 3ds Max 2010. I'd like some opinions on whether or not it's time to upgrade. I feel like I'm living in the past without the Slate Material Editor -- are there other features I'm missing out on? Does Max 2013 have all the kinks worked out yet? I'd really appreciate some input. Justin Hunt
2012 is good. Although I still dont use slate. I have installed 2013 and the product updates which are essential but we haven't rolled it out to production and a few essential plugins aren't available yet. In the past I have been eager to upgrade sooner rather than later, but this isn't the cast with 2013, I just am not that excited about it. The direct linking of RVT files was a good incentive as we work with a lot of revit files, but anything mildly complex just falls over. jhv
anwarhakim
I still work with Max 2011 reason is it has good plugins avaibility which i dont find easy for 2012 & 2013 . Other reason is it needs good GPU power .
braddewald
Thanks for the advice. If I do upgrade to 2013, I get the special upgrade price, instead of having to pay the full MSRP price. Do you think it's worth it to upgrade just because it's the last year I can do it?

Chris MacDonald
I never use the slate material editor, I find its only use is when showing someone your material setup, other than that I've never used it in production. I do tend to use all the new massfx stuff though.
Scott Schroeder
Slate sucks the fat one, you are not missing out on anything. It looks cool and is neat in concept, but if you use it for anything more then 5 materials it gets beyond complicated to keep things straight. Even if you create multiple tabs. 2013 still has bugs, so I'd look out for those. As I understand, they aren't too major any more as long as you have the service pack and hotfixes. At least, no more annoying that your usual Max bugs. I'd upgrade for the improvements in view port speed over 2010 if anything.
braddewald
I contacted Autodesk and they told me that if I do upgrade to 2013, then it replaces my 2010 license and I won't be able to use it anymore! The only way around it is to purchase a subscription and they will let me downgrade back to 2010 if I want. But the online store doesn't allow you to purchase a subscription package along with an upgrade to 2013. What a nightmare!
