Proxy = crash

That isn't a bug between Vray and Max. I've done this more times than I could count without error.

 

Proxies can be funky though. If it gets made from bad geometry or if any aspect goes awry while the proxy is being made, it can make your life difficult. It can be a better practice to either start with the geometry in your scene, and the auto-proxy it right then and there or to drag-merge a working proxy into your scene and place it where you want it.
