branskyj
Hi all, I have a problem with a brick wall in 3DS Max. I am NOT using VRay Displacement modifier, but the displacement slot in the material editor. All is well but I get some nasty texture stretching in the depth axis. As if the brick material finishes immediately after getting displaced and from then on is just the plaster. I tried applying a UVW map (box) to the wall but nothing changed. Is that fixable with VRay Displacement modifier and how, please. I am attaching an image with the problem. Thanks a lot for the help, guys. Scott Schroeder
This is normal. You are merely pushing the normal of the geometry, not creating new geometry. It's no different as if you would do an extrude, you would get some texture stretching. The displacement is happening after the UVW map, so again, it's like adding a edit poly modifier and doing an extrude. The displacement does not create new UVW coordinates. You have to ask yourself. Are you ever going to go that close to this wall to notice? Probably not. If you do, then you'll need to model the bricks properly. To fix this in displacement, you need to adjust where your black and white are in your displacement map. You need to push out the white brick area a little bit so when it displaces it takes some of the brick color with it rather than the grout. But again, I highly doubt you are going to get so close to your wall that you'll ever really notice.
branskyj
Wow, thanks for the quick reply, Scott. I actually need to be really close to the wall, it's not my preference it's how the client wants the camera to be setup. I will try what you suggested with the white and black areas of my displacement, hopefully it will solve somewhat the problem. Thanks a lot and have a nice evening.
