Degree in architecture, considering an electrical drafting job

My current job is for an architecture firm but I have to commute about 1.5 hours each way and the people I work for are a married couple who argues and yells at each other constantly and in front of me. It is a pretty uncomfortable situation to be in really. I was offered an interview for an electrical company in which I would be doing drafting. I am worried that if I take the job it will hurt my future career in architecture or in ever getting a job for an architecture firm again.

Advice, thoughts, and experiences would be more than appreciated!

Thank you!

Keep looking for a new job. Although it probably wont hurt your future options I dont think the drafting job sounds very rewarding. You could always ask your current employers to provide a more sane working environment, but a 1.5 hr commute tells me your future lies elsewhere anyway.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response. I think you're right that the electrical drafting job wouldn't be very rewarding. My current job is my first out of college and is certainly not where I want to be forever. I appreciate your reply and I think I will pass on the drafting job and keep looking for something more in my field of interest. At least I have a job right now so I don't have to take the first thing that comes my way. :)

You have a degree but it sounds like you are not continuing with the Part II? So you are not interested in becoming a qualified architect right?

If you have the arch degree and enjoy using computers then there's a lot of differing routes your career could take. I heard Warren Buffet on TV last night say the best advice he could give on choosing a career is to aim to do whatever you'd do if you were already financially secure. Good advice.

If you're staying in the arch field and dont have your accreditation then you'd better like working on computers, because thats what you'll be doing for the next 50 years or so. That said, the majority or architects do just the same, just the lucky few pop out napkin sketches and put their feet up.

I did what you did. Went to Uni, did the degree, went into practice and let it grow from there. I was inside a 3d studio within 2 years though. Its a good route, but you need to be in a nurturing environment. I was lucky with my first few employers, they were great. I fell into 3d and now I do enjoy it, but given my time again I'd do something that doesnt involve computers. I'd like to be a carpenter designing/making high end furniture, so hey, maybe next year...
