linarios
Hi, I dont know if its a setting inside vray (3ds max) that the all maps work predictably EXCEPT displacement. When i put in a displacement map it just deforms the object instead of following the black-white height map image... Even if I download a material and I know how its supposed to look like and havent changed any settings, once i enable the displacement map in the downloaded material it deforms the shape again, without following the height map! which leads me to think it is my configuration somehow and not the material itself... any ideas?? its driving me insane!!! not being able to use displacement in materials! Corey Beaulieu
Are you subdividing the object enough? Displacement uses face centers (I believe, but it could just be vertices) to sample the map so if there aren't enough, the displacement won't resemble the map. linarios
which parameters are you referring to exactly? I havent changed the default Vray displacement properties... still set to max subdiv 256, edge length 4... it is so odd for a downloaded material to not work, but only displacement gets messed up
Corey Beaulieu
I meant the object. It needs to be subdivided like crazy to work. Otherwise you should add a UVWMap and map the material how you want it. Then add a VrayDisplacementMod. place the map into the Texmap slot in the modifier and select the mapping type 2D or 3D. Tick keep continuity and set your amount. The rest is just refinement.
Francisco Penaloza
Check that the displacement map has the same ID of your diffuse map or the map that you are using as reference, also if you are importing geometry from other source, you may run in to scale problem, check your model scale and units and your foreign object scale, then adjust accordingly. Last but not least, you may have to run a Reset Xform for your imported object, sometimes they come with a uvmapping baked in the mesh so it can be giving you trouble adjusting it.
