Keen098
Hi, I have a big problem with 3DS Max. Today i setup my first render with a carpet "Hair and Fur" everything works fine, the render starts etc... but after 1,3h rendering when the scene was finished, 3ds Max crashes "application error" and thats it. I try to render it again a few times but every time when the render was finish or i cancel the redne manuely, 3ds max crashes and say application error. What is these about? any Idea? My System: Win7 64Bit, Serivce Pack 1 Intel i7 2600K (3400Ghz) 16 GB Ram 3DS Max 2013 Design 64Bit, Service Pack 2 Vray 2.30.
johannes
I'm having the same problem. I believe it's a problem with some geometry in the scene. I tried a blank scene and no problem. Also, different render settings seem not to help.
Scott Schroeder
If memory serves me correctly, hair and fur are calculated after the main render has finished or has been canceled. Hair and fur can be very memory intensive, which is sounds like you are hitting your memory limits. Generally, there are better options to make carpets than hair and fur. If you need shag or fluffy carpet, multiscatter or forest pro work really well and are easier on your system.
johannes
Thanks Scott, it sounds like you are right. But then again, i never have enough memory

Keen098
Hi, Thanks for the answers, about the memory, i think 16 Gb of ram should be enough!? @Jo Hannes, i try the hair and fur carpet tomorrow in an other scene maybe the problem is really just in this scene. johannes
I've settled with VRAY fur for now which works ok. Thanks again.
Keen098
What you mean with "settled with vary" so you didn't use hair and fur for now?
johannes
I couldn't get it to work so I used the vray FUR option. It's well explained in Scott's link at viscorbel.

Can you provide a screencap of your scene? It could be you are trying to cover too wide of an area. Max's native hair and fur can look good, but it is computationaly expensive. Remember that 16GB of Ram isn't just being used for fur. You have Windows, applications, Max, and everything else from your render loaded in there as well. Keen098
Hi I try yesterday a "simple" new scene with a hair and fur carpet, the result is not the same like in the first "big" scene. 3ds Max gives me now no error message more it just crashes... I take a look at the Windows TaskManager, my Usage of memory is just 4 to 5 Gb. A good friend of mine have exactly the same PC as mine with the difference that he has just 8Gb of memory, but on his machine everything works fine. It makes me crazy, such a stupid error! Keen098
I try Yesterday a new render with a new scene, nothing special but hair and fuir crashes again. About the Vray Fuir and displacement carpets, i think tehy didn't look so good as a fuir an hair carpet. About the 16 GB Ram, i strated the windows task manager, when i start to render the scene, windows use only 5 Gb of my ram !???
