Poco
There are several kinds of water like for example: water in a bottle, seawater, water in a pool, under water, animated water, ... What kind do you want. Plus what renderer do you use in MAX, scanline, MR, ... ? If you use Mental Ray then you will find some great examples + scenes here: http://www.jeffpatton.net/Mental-ray.htm Hopes this helps
Tiny Piney
I use Max scanline w/ lighttracer. The water will be a shallow pool and will not be animate. Thanks

jucaro
here's a basic water material that'll work on most render(if not on all) Put a noise material in bump slot and adjust as needed (for the distortion and tiny ripples) -make the material semi-transparent -adjust the material's IOR (water IOR is 1.333) -make reflectance value to something more or less like that of glass ...render with a cold bottle of beer ----- And here's a link to more material IOR http://www.3dluvr.com/gabesilver/ior.htm
