drag a selection of objects and cut+paste to one layer?

Hi,

 

I wanted to drag a selection of objects (that are on different layers) and just cut n' paste them onto one layer (effectively merging them).

 

Possible?

EDIT:

 

I think I've found a way - using 'match' and selecting a destination layer. But this doesn't take block references with it. I gather that's a whole other story.
