I like that there is new stuff often, I tend to visit the forum many times (probably too often) a day. I scroll through the gallery images and open those that catch my eye. For the forums I go straight to the "Unread posts" link, very seldom do I go to the main forum page.

My only comment for the main gallery is if I am several pages deep and I open an image to view , I get thrown back to the first page when I hit the back button. To get around this I have to open images in a new Tab, its a small thing but annoying non the less.

i will make a concerted effort next week at work in between putting on unnecessarily long test renders to chekc out this new gallery

i continue to look here and post here rather than other forums because i much prefer the community of people here and have been following their posts for nearly 10 years now. CGA has also always veered more towards architectural illustration and good animation rather than the polite soulless interior decoraton middle class render aspirations of the Berkenman forum. Evermotion is also mostly indecipherable gibberish.

I just wish for the high quality community to be kept intact here and given precedence in any way possible over the current 'volume' posting approach that is unfortunately - despite best intentions prevailing and making talented and established users unwilling to share and participate

Thanks nicnic. I am genuinely interested in making the site as best it can be, so I'm very interested to hear what your impression is once you really dig into it.

Yes, there is trade off here. We use AJAX on the frontpage to decrease page load times, but pressing back fails as a result. Tough call, but I know what you are talking about.

Though, I do miss the finished works threads. There is so much information being missed by lack of comments. In a thread, it's easier to post breakdowns and what not or ask questions. In this current system you can't post a long breakdown with images of how you did something.

I'm going to be doing some thinking about what can be done to encourage more in depth posting and participation on image posts. I hesitate to cross post information from the main gallery to the forum as it's redundant and rife with technical issues programtically, but maybe there is a way to call more attention to certain posts and to reward in-depth information posting.

I am going to look into how we can allow users to post multiple images per post, but it's a very difficult thing to do as it requires a MASSIVE change to the application and database.

What if you put the "Finished Work" section back in the forum and had those posts automatically cross-posted to the new "Gallery" on the main site. That way people could browse the finished work section of the forum in the way that they they used to? All work would end up in the gallery but not all gallery posts would end up in the finished work forum.

Maybe there is something that can be done on that end, but I hate to have redundant gallery systems. Will have to give this some more thought.

About the current Gallery: The problem is with the sorting -- people aren't going to "sort by" anything (maybe some will, but the majority will leave it at it's default sorting, look at the first couple pages and then go about their business elsewhere). There needs to be an algorithm that keeps highly viewed, highly commented, highly liked content on the top for at least 24 hours and lets the terrible stuff quickly fall to the bottom. (The stuff that is on top obviously can't stay on top indefinitely and should fall from the top based on time [like I said 24 hours at least]).

Your comment gave me an idea. I don't know technically what would be involved or how expensive it would be, but I could look at building an algorithm around the following:

1) The more comments/feedback (based on length not, "nice image") you leave on others images, the more weighting your own images would have when they are first posted

2) The more information you provide about your images the more weighting your own images would have when they are first posted

3) The more images you view by others the more weighting your own images would have

4) The more images you like or users you subscribe to the higher the weighting (not ranked as high as others for obvious reasons, but a gauge or site engagement)

There are probably some other metrics that could be thrown in there to push the appropriate images to the top, but one of the largest challenges with any sort of algorithm is that is requires people to view a large percentage of the images and like, view, comment on the image for the system to work. Bit of a catch 22 and much more chance of good images being missed, but a system like the above would reward participation on top of what we do now.
