Brian Cassil
We've just switched to 2013 and just for the heck of it I thought I would give nitrous a try again. Surprizingly, the performance with large models seemed much better, and I havent experienced any of the strange dissapearing objects and other strange artifacts that had plagued nitrous in 2012. There is one problem though and it might be a dealbreaker for me if I can't find a solution. The maps appear to display at extremely low resolutions. This kills one of the basic parts of my workflow which is to import sketches and use them as a template for modeling from. I've read that nitrous uses the actual resolution of the bitmaps unless you use bitmap proxies but this simply can't be. I'm not using bitmap proxies and the resolution looks terrible. Bruce Hart
You might wish to try the "show realistic material in viewport" button in the material editor instead of the default "show shaded material" option.
Josef Wienerroither
Maps/Materials set to "Realistic" in the material editor will always show in highest possible resolution Maps/Materials set to "Shaded" are displayed with some 3dsmax.ini set resolution limits, You can use my "Nitrous Texture Tweaker" script to control the "shaded" mode map resolutions in the viewport, the resolution of the environemt/background image display and the procedural map display resolution ( for gradients, noise and such ) http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/nitrous-texture-tweaker For more complete control over the various Nitrous related settings and tweaks, you can use my "PowerPreview" script, which allows you to tweak the viewport settings ( besides allowing to create HQ previews from the Nitrous viewport ). PowerPreview has Nitrous Texture Tweaker integrated by the way ... http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/powerpreview-high-quality-nitrous-previews Edited January 30, 2013 by spacefrog
Brian Cassil
Thanks for the help guys. I didn't see any change in using the realistic vs. the shaded setting for the viewport. I tried the scipt posted but it didn't run. However I did find another script http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/nitrous-set-texture-size-limit that ultimately did the job. It's not the most intuitive thing. I have to click "disable selected", then change the map size, then click "enable selected" to see the change. Josef Wienerroither
I tried the scipt posted but it didn't run. Ahh - yes i forgot to post the installation steps ( they are contained inside the script itself in header comment ) INSTALLATION: ---- Open this Script in Maxscript Editor and press "Evaluate" ( Ctrl-E ) ---- You will find it the "Customize User Interface Dialog" in the "Spacefrog Tools" - category ---- Simply map "Nitrous: Viewport Texture Tweaker" to a keyboard shortcut, menu entry or button as usual This script is a Macroscript which you have to assign to a Keyboard shortcut, button or menu entry... erickdt
I am having similar issues except my issue applies mostly to the viewport background. I have a spherical environment map that I am trying to use as the viewport background but it is totally pixelated and looks like crap. I have tried both scripts above with no success. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Extremely frustrated >:-( E
erickdt
Also, Spacefrog I'd love to download your HQ preview script but when I click on the link it says that page has not been found. Any ideas? E
Josef Wienerroither
Could you retry the link ? Here both links ( the one in my post above and the actual download at scriptspot are working ) This is the direct PowerPreview DL link BTW http://www.frogsinspace.at/?download=PowerPreview%20(latest%20version) And regarding your ENV map resolution: The resolution of the background map is realtime updated in my Nitrous Texture Tweaker script. Meaning when you hit the according enable/disable button, you should immediatly see the BG map resolution change in the viewport. But of course if your inital map is rather lowres, depending on your camera's FOV you will not have much luck seeing a good resolution in a sphereical env map... What's the pixel resolution of your spherical map ? Edited February 2, 2013 by spacefrog
erickdt
Hi Spacefrog, That new link does appear to work. I'm excited to get a change to use it! In regards to my background map, it's 10,000 pixels wide and 5,000 tall. I use it on almost all of my renders and it comes out fine on final renders of almost any size. I will try your map resolution script again and let you know what I find out. I'm pretty sure I already tried what your suggesting but it can't hurt to try again! Thanks!
