workstation GPU update help

hi guys

 

i would like to update my workstation GPU but i'm confuse about an issue . since i'm not that good in hardware i would appreciate your help .

 

first this my pc confg.

 

Intel Core i7-3960X 3.3

ASUS RAMPAGE IV X - X79

Corsair 32 GB Ram

- NVIDIA Quadro 6000 6GB GDDR5

Crucial 256 GB m4 2.5-Inch SSD

- WD Caviar Black 2 TB

Corsair1200-Watt Power Supply -

Corsair Hydro H100

Samsung Blu-Ray Combo

Corsair 800D Black Case

 

 

i would like to add 2 tesla c2075 (to use NVIDIA Maximus | technology ) BUT in the motherboard specification i read that :

Expansion Slots :

4 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x16 or x16/x8/x16 or x16/x8/x8/x8, red) *1

1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x8 mode, gray) *1

1 x PCIe 2.0 x1

 

and tesla c2075 is PCIe x16 Gen2

 

 

what i need to now can i install 2 tesla on my system ?

 

this cards are expensive but i'm finding good deal to buy it from my x company for 900$ each they didnt even use it but i dont want to throgh cash on it if it will not fit in my pc

Should work just fine. Your motherboard can fit 4 dual slot cards just fine. You will have "just" 3x. The PSU should handle them easily too. Make sure you have the pcie power cables to power them thought: modular psu is nice alright but too iften ppl misplace the spare cables.

There are very few stuff that can stress a PCIe 2.0 16x lane, and X79 has a total of 40x PCIe 3.0 lanes.

PCI 3.0 is twice as fast as a PCI 2.0, so PCIe 3.0 8x is in theory equivalent to PCIe 2.0 16x, which is what c2075 and Quadro 4000/5000/6000 (i.e. Fermi cards) support.

 

Long story short, X79 motherboards can in theory support 5x Fermi Tesla/Quadro cards without bottle-necking their performance.

Motherboards with more than 4x 16x PCIe slots, like the Asus WS line or Asrock Extreme 11, have added PLX PEX 8747 or equivalent chips that add additional lanes linked directly to the CPU.

 

Even if all of the above "failed", tests have shown that the performance penalty -at least in games - from using PCIe Gen 2.0 8x slots vs. 16x (say in a Zxx motherboard that cannot do more than 8x with mutliple cards) is not that significant.

Unfortunately, no your motherboard will not support two Tesla C2075 and a Quadro 6000.

I went through the thing. I don't see why it would not support it.

 

There might be the case that she sees the PCIe 16x slots not being 16x capable with more than 2x cards (it has 40 lanes total), but remember, it has 40 lanes of PCIe 3.0 ~ the equivalent bandwidth of 80 PCIe 2.0 lanes. Thus it can do 3x or even 4x PCIe 2.0 cards like the Fermi Quadros and Teslas with theoretically no issues.

 

What? Do you have to have a "certified" workstation to do it? No custom builds?

Sounds a bit weird.

This technology isn't related to motherboard and bios.

As long as your vga cards could support the technology, motherboard doesn't have limitation to the technology.

But, for your issue, you want to add totally 5 cards. Motherboard only has 4 slots. So, you need to decrease to 4 cards.
