How are you using your Cintiq?

Recommended Posts

I am seriously considering a Cintiq 24hd or 24hd touch. Just wondering how people who have them are using them in your work flow with 3d architectural illustration?

Do you still use two LCD screens along with the Cintiq?

Has the Cintiq replaced your "primary" screen?

Is it annoying to keep tilting it back and forth for drawing and modeling?

What do you love best about working with a Cintiq?

Thanks for any feedback.

I had the 12 for a while and ended up getting rid of it. At the time, it would only function when replacing one of my 2 primary displays and I found the traditional display to be far more beneficial. If you have two identical graphic cards in your system, it may work better but that wasn't an option for me at the time. Personally, I'd wait and see what they have up their sleeve in a few months:

Newer GPUs from nVidia do support more than 2x displays per card. If you are after a Quadro that does that, we are talking K5000 and $1700 tho...

GTX 5xx/6xx do it too.

AMD cards did quite a few years now (most do 4, some do 6).

Btw, I believe you don't need identical cards to drive more than the max supported displays...keep your 2x displays on your primary card, and hook the cintiq on Quadro 600 or another cheap secondary card (a gazillion combinations are possible actually). If all you want cintiq for is 2D with Adobe or whatnot, even the built in IGP found in 2nd and 3rd gen i5/i7 CPUs will work just fine.

You can mix-match AMD and nVidia cards. In most cases you won't have driver issues.

I own a 12WX and never really got on well with it for a few reasons, low resolution/jitters near the edge/colour accuracy. So I use an intuos 5 now and find that much easier once you learn how to disconnect hand and eye. These 24inch models do look awesome and they have fixed all the problems I have had with the 12wx. I was really tempted to get one but the more i think about it the more i realise i still use my mouse an awful lot in photoshop and I can do everything I need with my intuos. The only reason I would get one is if I were to do a lot of hand drawing but generally I use it more for dodge and burn type effects where accuracy isn't always necessary.

I spend about half my time working on it with arms locked up and the horizontal shelf a bit shy, standing with me. I pulled a old camping sleeping pad out of the closet and hold on for comfort. When I want a break, it's easy to swing in a sitting configuration.

The stand is easy to adjust, I honestly move all the time depending on my needs. Although my two most often used are probably almost vertical and almost flat.

In previous Cintiq models, I've heard that it's a bit annoying to use in a flat position. This is not true of the 24HD. Because the tablet can lean on your desktop a bit, it looks more like a regular drawing office.

Limited rotation function which 21UX less attractive. All drawing applications I use have a rotation function area built in. It is faster and easier than moving the screen anyway.
