Sketchrender
Solid angles Arnold rendering system. It is being flagged as pipeline for film studios, and special effects. Which to me says it's fast and possibly expensive, but if its fast , why is it not being marketed at the Acr viz section of the business? When is it out, I see new demo reels out today, and it looks very good. I remember it for 15 years ago, it was good then, Xavier used it, and set the standard for Arc viz work back then. So anybody know anything about it. phil
matthewspencer
Which to me says it's fast and possibly expensive, but if its fast , why is it not being marketed at the Acr viz section of the business? It's probably much more lucrative for them to focus on close relationships with CG/VFX firms, which is how they started. Some massive contracts with Sony Pictures ImageWorks and ILM easily bring in far more cash than trying to court the arch viz industry. I think it makes sense for a rendering engine to specialize. Arnold can collaborate with these VFX studios to really refine their product. Hypershot/KeyShot changed the game for product viz, and it's hyper-specialized. I think alot of renderers stretch themselves too thin. Sometimes I wonder if the engineers at Maxwell might accomplish more if they didn't have to spend their time developing for 3DS/ArchiCAD/Bonzai/C4D/FormZ/Houdini/LW/Maya/Microstation/modo/Revit/Rhino/SU/SW/XSI. Scott Schroeder
Possibly, due to what I've seen, Arnold is geared towards Maya and Maya's .5% share of the architecture world isn't enough to warrant them to invest. The seem to support Softimage too, but I can't find out if Max is supported. Also Arnold is not available for a general purchase like, say Vray or Maxwell is. It doesn't help that they have the worst website out there: http://www.solidangle.com More info on Arnold: http://www.fxguide.com/featured/the-art-of-rendering/ (you have to scroll down a bit) Though for what it's worth, it's funny to read the article and see how many of those companies are no longer in business or have filed for Chapter 11. This is another critical point from the article: “What really makes V-Ray shine compared to other renderers is: pipeline. With V-Ray, artists can release great photoreal images without a a large team of TDs to support them. That one small fact is actually huge,” Metzger points out. “The costs for visual effects are lowering like crazy. It’s becoming extremely hard to compete when VFX studios are sending half of the production work overseas. Being on the studio side of things recently I have seen the numbers and bids for jobs. It’s actually really crazy to see who can do what at the lowest possible cost. Depending on the renderer used has a huge impact on this. Instead of having a huge TD team adding features and customizing everything you now have software companies like Chaos Group who have 30+ programmers to assist around the clock. That saves a ton of development money and time, and maximizes efficiency.”
