maryannjohnstone
I am in a course for 3d Animation and I had to open data files from the disc that came with the book Essential CG Lighting techniques 3rd edition. When I went to open the files it saying in 3ds max 2012 that these were not valid max files so I installed 3ds max 2009 and now I can open the files which is great but i wanted to use my 2012 version because lets face it 2009 isn't that great. I was wondering if anyone out there knew of a solution to my problem, and if so please help. My instructors don't know of this problem and to tell the truth I think they think I am messing things up but I'm not help.
Francisco Penaloza
That's strange, the newest versions of Max should be able to open older versions, not the other way around though. Have you checked if there is some plug in missing or something similar? Sometimes when you try to open a file if this fail try to merge the file in your scene, usually works. luthias42
If you can't open any file then you may need to reinstall max 2012. if it's just the files from the disc, then I would save the files in '09 then merge into 2012 like Fran said. andreygoncharov
Maybe the problem is minor. I don't think you have to re-install the whole program because of one file. Try to contact Autodesk, I'm not surprised you have problem because their products work worse and worse every year. Let me try to open one of these files. Maybe solution is simple one, Thanks, A.
