blaz
Hi, I am using a dual AMD Opteron with 512 ecc reg RAM. i am wondering do i need to upgrade my RAM to 1G, because the cost is quiet high that normal RAM. and sadly it can only use the ecc reg. my question is, - if i upgrade my ram, would that be any different in the rendering speed? - is the rendeering count on RAM or processor? please, anybody can explain to me about this? thanks in advance.. Frosty
I think you need closer tto 2Gs of ram in that machine. As far as I know, the memory is split between the two CPUs. Effectively you are running two computers with 256MB of ram each - cant render too much with that. Personally, my machines have a minimum of 512/cpu. abicalho
You need more RAM if your processes are running out of RAM. Open Task Manager while you're doing your stuff, or setup a Performance Counter to measure System RAM usage. If you're needing more than 512, then you should get more RAM. If you're not, then all is fine. Of course adding more RAM will speed up rendering, if when rendering you're using more than 512M. If you're already within 512, then there will be no difference. blaz
thanks for your quick respond guys, i will go and get another piece this evening. and another question, would that be any effect if i use different brand of ram, just in case i find cheaper brand in the market. just worried my system will give my problem, cause now it is in a very perfect condition. got the system imaged last night. thanks W
oyie
if i were you i would go for the same brand to avoid any problem concerning compatibility issue.
Life Style
It's good practice to get the exact RAM type because the system will operate at the lowest common performance. If you get a lower speed/quality ram you could actully be lowering the performance of the other stick of RAM, which if you are only using processes within your current 512 could actually slow your computer down.
