Jason Matthews
Hey everyone, I have been thinking about adding another render node to the 5 that I already have. Currently they are all in their own separate boxes and running their own OS (Windows 7 Pro). The question I have is do I need to buy a new OS license for every node I have or is there a way to clone the hard drives so that it does not require another OS? Thanks,
Dimitris Tolios
You can clone the drives with the OS + rendering programs installed to save time, but you should change the serial / activate each node with a unique windows license to be 100% legally covered . Francisco Penaloza
Our Greek friend is right, if your hardware is similar or identical you can easily clone the hard drives, but Windows license resides some place on the motherboard so it may ask you to activate that copy again, then you'll have to purchase new license, because Windows is designed for 1 PC only. Jason Matthews
That's what I figured. Its just a waste of money to have to set something up like this only to use the hardware. One day they will figure out how to add hardware without needing a hard drive and OS. Wait, do they have that now? LOL!

Well, there are a lot of stuff "they have now", but guess what: won't operate as rendering nodes for our Windows based modelers... So...brace yourself and do what you have to do... Francisco Penaloza
well that's the "limitation" of your 3D software actually I do not meant to diminish 3DS Max, but we all know the rules, is a software only for Windows systems. OSx is a lot cheaper but you need a software that can run on OSx such, Maya, Cinema 4d, Modo and others, or you can use Blender and run it on Linux, both free But yes Microsoft license is a pain. Dimitris Tolios
Well...you can use a single MacOS X on all your "authorized Macs" for $29.99... Issue is that "authorized Macs" cost far more per TFLOP than a DIY/BYO render node...far far more than a windows licence. So as far as cheap* OS goes without breaking EULA leaves you only with Linux atm... As far as Linux render nodes, think native support is possible only with VRay for Maya, and Blender related products. *cheaper than windows
Jason Matthews
Well I definitely want to do everything legally and if that means having to buy an extra $100 hard drive and $150 OS then that's what I have to do.
